About Charlie Cello

Charlie Cello was made in France around 1900 (making him over 100 years old!) and his maker is Lutherie Artistique M Courturieux. Charlie was passed on to Sophie when she was 16 years old from the family of her piano accompanist at the time. Unfortunately, Charlie had an old crack on his back which later re-opened and caused some odd buzzing sounds, and so he had to be fully restored (it took 8 months!). Thankfully he is now in perfect working order!

Charlie has travelled all over the world performing in orchestras with Sophie: he has been to America, Japan, UK, Germany, France, Austria, Estonia, Finland and Russia! He has also featured on over 40 studio recordings for various contemporary artists, performed at numerous weddings, functions and concerts, and helped inspire many young cellists as they start their journey into cello playing.

About Sophie

Sophie began her cello studies at the age of eight and studied in Sydney with Dorothy Sumner, Sonia Boardman (nee Koo) and Susan Blake.
